The GOSCARs (the Grassroots Owen-Smith Community Ranger Awards – to be presented annually to up to three top-performing Namibian conservancy game guards, conservancy lion or rhino rangers, community forest guards, fish guards or community resource monitors) are still open for nominations.

The awards recognise the men and women who work – and walk – in the field. They are the people the late Garth Owen-Smith would want honoured in his name; they represent the original concept with which Namibia’s internationally recognised community-based natural resource management program started.

Nominations should reach the NCE by or before 1 December 2021. A committee of four, including Dr Margaret Jacobson and Mr Beaven Munali, will select the finalists. The finalists will be presented with a cash prize and a framed certificate at a ceremony in April each year. The inaugural ceremony will be in April 2022.

The Announcement and the Nomination Form are also available on the NCE website at https://n-c-e.org/resource/goscars-grassroots-owen-smith-community-ranger-awards
