19th Apr 2012  Botanical Society of Namibia: Illustrated Talk

Illustrated Talk on "Responding to the central Namib uranium rush: the need for restoration research and monitoring" by Theo Wassenaar.

The Namib Desert is undergoing an unprecedented change. In the short space of ten years, the rush for Namibia's uranium resources has completely altered the landscape of the central Namib. The effects of powerlines and pipelines on animal movements, and the implications of impacts on groundwater for species like Welwitschia may significantly affect the integrity of the Namib's ecosystems.

In this talk, Theo Wassenaar, a researcher with Gobabeb Research and Training Centre discusses the fascinating perspectives that restoration gives for current and planned research and touches on aspects of training and advocacy.

At National Botanical Research Institute 8 Orban Street

19h30 (after the AGM)

2nd Apr 2012  NEWS Public Talk - A nature museum beyond time - people, landscape and rock art in the Brandberg/Dâureb BY Dr. Tilmann Lenssen-Erz

The highest mountain of Namibia, Brandberg/Dâureb, has attracted people for many ten thousand years and it continues to do so. But visiting the mountain means to learn living with nature. People of each period in history tried to meet this challenge and they had and will have their special way of interacting with nature. There is little doubt, however, that never again will a historic period be so enriching for the entire landscape as the times when hunter-gatherers more than 2000 years ago embellished the rocks of the mountain with their sophisticated art. Dr. Tilmann Lenssen Erz, from the Institute of Prehistoric Archaeology, University of Cologne, Germany, is a specialist for rock paintings. His expeditions have lead him to rock painting sites in Europe, Africa, North America and Australia. He is also an expert for the Brandberg and it’s more than 1000 sites with over 50.000 paintings.

VENUE: rooms of the Namibia Scientific Society, 110 Robert Mugabe Ave, opposite the National Theatre in Windhoek.

22nd Mar 2012  Public talk by Geological Survey of Namibia: Multidisciplinary evidence shows that the Sun and Water, and not CO2, have been and will continue to be the main drivers of past, present and future climates by Roy Miller

Is the Earth’s climate warming? Thousands of scientists have serious doubts about the major conclusions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Why? Climate is highly complex and there is much that we still do not understand. Reality has not followed predictive climate models. Evidence from space, the solar system, the sun, geology, fossils, volcanology, marine geology, limnology, oceanography, geophysics, physics, zoology, botany, ice cores, the atmosphere, and balloon and satellite measurements of temperature suggest that the change we are experiencing is quite normal and hardly related to increasing atmospheric CO2. Warming has been limited and is as much to do with the natural emergence from the Little Ice Age at 1850 AD, which was also the start of the industrial revolution, as anything else. At present, the Earth is in a warm interlude in a long-lived ice age.

The fossil record attests to abrupt climate changes in the past. Cosmic rays, the cyclical nature of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun and sunspot cycles affect our climate. Much of the radiant heat from the Sun is reflected back into space. Volcanic gases can cause warming (water vapour, CO2) or cooling (SO2) but quantities are difficult to measure. 85 % of the world’s active volcanoes are submarine. The cold, deep water above them dissolves most of the CO2 they emit. Residence time of this CO2 is probably 100s to 1000s of years before it is released to the atmosphere (warm surface water holds far less CO2). We cannot measure this CO2. The deep crust and mantle are the main sources of CO2.

CO2 is removed from the ocean by phytoplankton, shell fish and the formation of limestone. It is removed from the atmosphere by plants, bacteria in the soil and by the weathering of rocks. Residence time of CO2 in the atmosphere is about 5 years. Atmospheric CO2 concentrations have been high during past glaciations. Ice cores and sediments provide matching, long-term records of past climates; they show that deserts expand during glaciations. During ice ages and during transitions into and out of ice ages, climate fluctuates wildly between warm and cold. Climate is more stable during warm periods.

Water vapour is by far the most potent greenhouse gas. Without greenhouse gases, the Earth’s average temperature would be -18°C and there would be no life on Earth. Greenhouse gases are critical to life on Earth. Plants are the bottom of the food chain. Plants need warmth, water and CO2. Without CO2 there would be no plants and no life on Earth. CO2 is plant food. The Sun, water and CO2 are critical to life on Earth. CO2 has decreased steadily over the past 500 million years reaching 270 ppmv (by volume) at the end of the last ice age 14 700 years ago, the lowest ever recorded on Earth. The present value is 392 ppmv.

History and scientific data show that, on average, cold periods are characterised by extreme cold, reduced evaporation and precipitation, expansion of deserts, crop failure, famine, migration, disease, extinctions, war, depopulation. By contrast, the characteristics of warm periods are explosion of life, rapid speciation, life prospers, extinctions rare, time of abundance, better plant growth, abundant food, people wealthier, populations increase.

To quote Ian Plimer: “Why do we want to reduce or bury plant food? Carbon taxes are stupid. The Earth’s climate will continue to do what it has always done - change. We are the first generation of humans to fear warming.”

Where are we going? The demand for energy, coal, oil and gas increases every year but astronomers are predicting that the Earth will become cooler from 2012 to 2066. This appears to be corroborated by some long-term temperature curves.

We must simply adapt to change and encourage innovation and sustainable development.

20th Oct 2011  BotSoc Tree Award ceremony followed by Illustrated Talk by Colin Christiansen

At 18h30 at NBRI.

The Effects of Bush Encroachment on Groundwater Resources in Namibia It has long been established that bush encroachment has had severe consequences for cattle production in Namibia, and for biodiversity. Now a study for the Namibia Agricultural Union shows growing evidence of a connection between excess bush and groundwater recharge. This evidence translates into economic terms with direct implications for the management of Namibia's savanna ecosystems, and urban and industrial water needs. Arising out of various projects to utilize or control bush, various environmental management issues are identified.

20th Oct 2011  Movie showing: The  4th Revolution - Energy Autonomy

The Fourth Revolution: Energy, also known as Die 4. Revolution – Energy Autonomy, is a German documentary film by Carl-A. Fechner, released in 2010. It shows the vision of a global society, which lives in a world where the energy is produced 100% with renewable energies, showing a complete reconstruction of the economy, to reach this goal. The production of the film lasted four years and was financed by volunteers. The parts of the film were made in 10 different countries, showing existing pioneer projects in different cultures: from the vision of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammed Yunus and his micro-credits over the visions of the Right Livelihood Award laureate Hermann Scheer to enterprises that work hard to become all these visions' reality. The film started in the cinemas of Germany March 18, 2010 and will have its U.S. premiere at the San Francisco Green Film Festival in March 2011.In the German trailer to the film, the revolution in capitalist ownership of energy resources is stressed; Hermann Scheer says that "instead of a few owners we will have hundreds of thousands..." and "energy supply will receive a democratization". The film embodies the thinking of Hermann Scheer before his sudden death in 2010.

20th Sep 2011  Talk: Are Namibians Solar Cooking? What are the barriers? by Viktoria Keding of NaDEET

Since 2003, NaDEET has taught more than 5 000 Namibians how to solar cook in week-long intensive sustainable living programmes at NaDEET Centre. This has however not translated into 5 000 new daily solar cookers. To address this problem, NaDEET has expanded its programmes in 2010 to include adult community members. This presentation will look at this new programme, its aims and outcomes, and will explore NaDEET's exciting findings during an evaluation trip to visit participating communities. It will also identify the primary barriers to implementing solar cooking on a broad-scale in rural Namibians and the socio-economic and environmental benefits if these barriers can be overcome.

15th Aug 2011 - 19th Aug 2011 CBNRM short course: What do we need to know and understand? What capacities and skills do we need?

This will be the tenth year that Rhodes University have offered a course on Community-Based Natural Resource Management. Each year the course has taken a different approach in response to the needs expressed by participants, and identified through experience in the field.

The experience of the last few years' courses has shown clearly that many people have been appointed into positions with CBNRM related responsibilities. This year we will be focussing on the evaluation of CBNRM in order to share experiences with other practitioners. The course will provide opportunities for discussions and contributions from participants - although there will never be enough time for all that everyone wants to contribute! There will be group activities associated with some sessions.

The course will draw on the considerable body of experience gained in the past 20 years, and on much of the research over the same period, to present some of the core ideas and approaches that have emerged in relation to the reality of engaging in CBNRM practice. It will look at what is actually meant by 'CBNRM' – at the many different activities that are included under this heading, some of which are perhaps not appropriate. It will also discuss the main challenges encountered in implementing CBNRM, and analyze the considerable gap between the ideal (the theory and the 'rhetoric') and the reality of implementation 'on-the-ground'. Some cases studies on CBNRM from home and abroad will be presented.

21st Jul 2011  Public talk: The Forgotten Megafauna - Giraffe by Julian Fennessy

Despite a general fascination for this species, giraffe have so far received little scientific attention. Their taxonomic status is under question, subspecies are endangered and their numbers are plummeting, while their international 'pull' is second to none with regards to tourism. As such, they are truly Africa’s forgotten megafauna.

To be held on Thursday, the 21 July 2011, at 19h00 in the hall of the Namibia Scientific Society, 110 Robert Mugabe Ave, opposite the National Theatre.

Botanical Society of Namibia talk: Carol Steenkamp, a Senior Environmental Practictioner with Enviro Dynamics will present the findings of a Biodiversity Assessment of Windhoek and Windhoek Townlands. The loss of biodiversity is one of the world's most serious challenges and there is growing global concern about the status of the biological resources on which so much human life depends. Urban centres of all developing countries experience growing populations and increased settlement densities, this causes rising pressures on available natural resources, integrity of ecosystems and biological diversity.

To be held at 19h00 at the National Botanical Research Institute.

19th Jul 2011  Park Talk: Concessions – opening new routes and tourism opportunities presented by Erling Kavita, Protected Area Tourism Planning and Concession Specialist

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism introduced the Policy on Tourism and Wildlife Concessions on State Land in 2007. This has provided access for tourists to visit new destinations in areas previously closed to visitors, created business opportunities and economic empowerment for formerly disadvantaged Namibians and generated additional revenue for the State. Several new concessions will soon be on offer, opening new routes and products for the tourism industry.

Erling Kavita has more than a decade’s experience in community-based tourism and local economic development in Namibia's rural areas. He was one of Namibia's early pioneers of Joint Venture Business Agreements between the private sector and local communities.

Erling holds a Master's Degree in Tourism Business Administration from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom and has completed numerous executive development programmes in Singapore, the United States, South African and Namibia. He is currently completing a PhD at the University of Pretoria, focusing on assessing the local community perception of tourism as a development tool in rural areas of Namibia.

To be held on Tuesday, 19 July, 18h00, FNCC Gallery.

11th Jul 2011 - 15th Jul 2011 LEAP forward in poverty reduction: WWF Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) training for African countries

Venue: Windhoek/Kunene: Hotel Safari – Windhoek, and Uibasen Twyfelfontein Conservancy.

At its Annual Conference in 2009, WWF International adopted a policy on poverty and conservation which called for the WWF to address poverty related issues and their linkages to conservation.

As a first step in this process, the WWF Africa-Madagascar Programme organised a series of diagnostic exercises under the banner ‘Learning Exercise for Action on Poverty’ (LEAP) aimed at reflecting on poverty‐related issues. This includes the need for better understanding CBNRM (Community Based Natural Resource Management) as a strategy for responding to the needs of conservation and livelihoods enhancement.

Acknowledging the strides made by Namibia as a country in the implementation of CBNRM, the WWF Africa-Madagascar Programme has requested WWF in Namibia and its in-country partners to design and deliver a training programme on CBNRM for targeted WWF offices in Africa. In response, WWF in Namibia and NACSO have jointly developed the training programme, which will be the first of its kind.

The first three days of the training will take place in the Safari Hotel, Windhoek, from 11 July. On 13 July delegates will leave for Twyfelfontein at midday, and on the 14 and 15 July conservancy staff from Uibasen Twyfelfontein, Torra and Doro !Nawas Conservancies will give presentations.

4th Jul 2011 - 7th Jul 2011 Giraffe Conservation Foundation & IUCN International Giraffe Working Group: 1st 'Wild' Giraffe Indaba

The Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) together with the IUCN SSC ASG International Giraffe Working Group (IGWG) invites all scientists, students, wildlife managers, and decision-makers in the field of giraffe research, conservation and management to attend the first ever 'wild' giraffe Indaba (conference) in Africa at the Etosha Safari Lodge, Namibia, from 4 to 7 July 2011, including a half-day seminar on 7 July 2011: 'The Conservation and Management of giraffe in Africa – looking forward'.

The venue, situated adjacent to the world famous Etosha National Park and approximately 400 km north of Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, is an appropriate setting for this valuable conservation event as the Namibian giraffe population continues to increase while others appear to be dwindling.

The theme of the Indaba is: 'Giraffe: The Forgotten Megafauna'. Despite a general fascination for this species, giraffe have so far received little scientific attention and as such are truly Africa's forgotten megafauna.

3rd Mar 2011  Namibia Scientific Society talk: Etosha Untamed Wilderness or Cultural Landscape? by Dr. Ute Dieckmann.

To be held at 19h30 in the hall of the Namibia Scientific Society, 110 Robert Mugabe Ave, opposite the National Theatre.

The Etosha National Park is Namibia’s premier tourist attraction. It is most famous for its abundant wildlife drawn to the dusty waterholes and the vast salt pan that lies at its heart. The area south of the great white pan, where tourist route and lodges are situated, was once the dominion of the Hai//om, an indigenous San or "Bushmen" community who hunted and gathered around the pan. The German colonial Administration established the park in 1907. They tolerated and indeed welcomed the presence of the Hai//om, whose traditional territory outside of the park has been occupied by white settlers. The Hai//om remained in the park for almost another half century until 1954 when they were forced from their ancestral home. As a result they joined the legion of landless generational farm-labourers eking a living on the farms on Etosha’s borders and their labour sustained an uneconomic and heavily subsidised white owned commercial agricultural sector. The presentation will outline the history of the park focussing on the developments affecting the former inhabitants and will also give insight in the current situation of the Hai//om in and around Etosha.

21st Oct 2010  The Botanical Society of Namibia's Annual Tree Awards Ceremony

18h30 at the NBRI, Orban Street, Windhoek.

TREE AWARDS CEREMONY: We have three recipients for the Awards this year, one from the north, one from Okahandja and one from Windhoek. Do join us for this appreciation of what some folk are doing.

“DIVERSITY OF TREES IN NAMIBIA”: Tree diversity in Namibia?  That won’t be a very long talk, I hear you think.  How many trees can there be in a desert?  You’d be surprised!  A lot greater diversity than in Europe.  Come along and find out.  Of course, you have to change your European mind-set as to what a tree is.  What our trees lack in height they more than make up for in variety.  Not only is there a diversity of species, there is a great diversity of shape, form and adaptation to our harsh and very varied climate and topography.  We have some of the world’s oldest and most bizarre trees.  Tall and skinny, short and fat, smooth and silky, old and gnarled, spiky, hooky, sticky – we have them all!    For ten years Barbara Curtis was the project leader of the Namibian Tree Atlas project and had the privilege of meeting most of our fascinating trees face-to-face.   Together with Coleen Mannheimer, she produced the “Tree Atlas of Namibia” and “Le Roux and Müller’s field guide to Trees and Shrubs of Namibia”.

As usual, there will be refreshments available afterwards and an opportunity for socialising, seeing both familiar and new faces.

1st Sep 2010 - 7th Sep 2010 Arbor Week

Newsflash from eco awards Namibia: Arbor Day was created to remind people of the importance of trees in our environment, especially given the planet's current deforestation and global warming. It originated in Nebraska, US and is now celebrated around the world. In Africa, this period had been extended, and our annual Arbor Week lasts from 01 to 07 September. eco awards Nambia would like to remind you to celebrate the importance of caring for our land by planting trees wherever you can.

What You Can Do to Celebrate Arbor Week: Find a local indigenous plant nursery in your area, and support them by buying some trees. Gather some staff from your operation/office or lodge and visit your local community to plant your trees. It just takes a few small steps to help make a difference.
